Translation Matters – What is the Best English Language Dictionary for a Translator?
In principle, I would warn. We sell some Merriam-Webster’s and other products, so my answer will naturally be oriented in this direction. However, Oxford, Random House, Hippocrene (my wife edited a great Albanian English Dictionary for Hippocrene) and others wonderfuldictionaries really well. If you need a dictionary, by all means, get the best possible, taking into account their specific needs. In the case of some language professionals, which could be severaldictionaries (as bulging shelf of my wife can attest).
Since I found the title interesting enough to continue playing at that stage, I imagine you are a language professional or aspiring to be one or trying to improve translation skills. Recourse to choose certainly matters in this regard.
We strongly recommend that you use the most complete and extensive dictionary resource you need for your purposes. If you are a professional translator, you must keep in mind a resource that my wife found a couple of years … 3rd at Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary.

Note that the CD-ROM, without being a great resource in itself, is as complete as the real pocket dictionary. Although not as complete as the hardback version is a must for all language professionals.
